I picked up my test result this afternoon. After which, I planned to grab iced coffee from Starbucks. Out of the 4 readings, 2 are a bit elevated based on the acceptable range. I will have to pass on Starbucks, for now.
So, what is gestational diabetes?
According to a very reliable source, pregnancy hormones make it difficult for insulin to do its job. The pancreas usually produces more insulin to keep up. But, when the sugar level in the blood is too high and the insulin level can not keep up with the demand, it results to this condition. Gestational diabetes causes the glucose to stay in the blood instead of being absorbed by the cells to be used as energy.
(Nose bleed!!!)
Will it put my baby or me at risk?
Yes, it may cause the baby to be hypoglycemic to process the sugar being supplied by the mother's blood. This condition may also result to a very large baby that can not be delivered the normal way. That means undergoing C-section or having a larger episiotomy. Gestational diabetes may also predispose an individual to develop preeclampsia.
(Nose bleed again!!!)
I will wait till I have an actual OB's interpretation before I consider that I am a full-fledged gestational diabetic (if there is a term). In the meantime, more fruits and water for me. Chocolates, pastries and iced coffee would have to wait.
